Red Hat Orchards

Orchard plan 2026
REDHAT is at PE33 0EN West Norfolk UK

A small 2 acre orchard of known varieties of grafted Regia walnuts planted in 2001 – 80-90 trees.

Now with a closed canopy and giving a small commercial crop. Adjourning is a 2 acre grid pattern orchard in stewardship, of half standard apple trees approximately 60 years old.

The walnuts are unsprayed and maintenance is mowing, taking out dead wood and some pruning.

Contained by the walnuts is a garden of productive medicinal plants, harvested, processed and used by Artemisia Plant Pathways CIC in one of the buildings. Visit Artemisia Pant Pathways CIC website for more details.

Harvesting, drying and sorting begins around the 22nd of September. A simple process though labour intensive. It usually coincides with the departure of the last nesting swallows.

This year the first male was seen at 3:10pm on the 4th of April.

REDHAT Red Kernelled Walnuts

Originally grown from a Red Guisenheim / Red Danube walnut in 2001. This tree bore pink coloured nuts after 8 years. Some of this crop were then planted…….. 8 years on some gave brown / normal kernels, four red kernelled ones were retained giving a variation of colour and flavour.

Planted to sell at farmers markets at the same time as the apples, walnuts have the bonus of a longer selling period after drying. They can also be a valuable timber. Once they start cropping it is more likely they will survive the whim of the chainsaw and seem to be a relatively low maintenance crop.

This is the first time Redhat has been open to the public and I have retained some of last years crop for tasting and sampling ( crack your own ). Yields vary from year to year and so does flavour.

Having visited several Agroforestry sites last year , I thought it might be valuable for people thinking of planting walnuts to be able to walk and sit under trees planted 25 years ago and see small scale harvesting.

I have found curiosity rewarding, sometimes by “sticking my nose in” or just sitting in the shade on a stone step for long enough to become aware of what is actually happening.

There is limited parking so an email or text in advance would be good.

Katy Fullilove from Artemisia will be here on Friday morning on the 15th of May 2026.

I will be here on Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of May 2026. 10 am – 12 noon and 1pm – 4pm.

If anyone is interested in visiting at other times as a small group that could possibly be arranged.
